Large Hadron Collider's First Test

On Wednesday the World's Largest Particle Collider successfully completed its first major test, by firing a beam of protons all the way around the 27 kilometer long tunnel at the Swiss-French border. This test will help scientists in understating the origins and evolution of the universe.

The first beam in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN1 was successfully steered around the full 27 km of the world’s most powerful particle accelerator at 10h28 of 10th September, 2008. The collider was designed to push the proton beam close to the speed of light, at a rate of 11,000 times a second around the tunnel. This historic event marks a key moment in the transition from over two decades of preparation to a new era of scientific discovery.

CERN, French acronym for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is the world's leading laboratory for particle physics. It has its headquarters in Geneva. Reunited with Father, 5 years after Cremation

A man in UK has been reunited with his father, five years after the cremation. How it is possible? Actually, due to mistakes in identification process of a dead body, the father was declared dead. Now, five years after the funeral, John Renehan from Didsbury, spotted his father on a television appeal.

John Renehan's father John Delaney went missing in 2000. The family failed in all attempts to uncover information about Delaney's whereabouts. Then, a decomposed body matching his description was found in the grounds of Manchester Royal Infirmary in January 2003. The body was identified as Mr Delaney and a funeral was held.

Then, five years after the cremation, Mr Renehan spotted his father on a television appeal about finding the family of the man in the care home. So, Mr. Delaney was alive and had actually been put in a care home after being found wandering around the town with memory loss.

Mr Renehan then contacted the police, who asked him a series of questions before DNA tests confirmed their relationship. In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said that the identification mix-up was a matter for the coroner, who is no longer in the post. Now, police started an investigation to identify the man cremated in 2003. Link

Excessive Fat Stopped a Bullet

Sometimes being too fat saves your life! Ask me how? Because your fat can stop a killer bullet. Actually such kind of an incident happened in Germany and saved the life of a 20-stone man.

Rolf Mittelhaus, 49, was shot by a mugger. But, the bullet got trapped in his fat and he didn't even notice that he'd been shot until he was examined after reporting the attack to police two days later.

"A mugger attacked me and I heard a loud bang but I'd been drinking and didn't really know what was going on. I didn't feel any pain," he told police.

Doctors recovered the bullet stuck in rolls of fat when it fell out during a routine examination for injuries. The bullet barely pierced the skin and remained struck inside the fat, without causing any harm to the man. So, sometimes excessive fat saves your life!
