Spray Blasts Off Apartment

A man in New Jersey ended his fight against household pests by blowing up his own apartment! What? Isias Vidal Maceda, the man, was actually spraying some chemicals in his kitchen. But due to his ignorance or any other reason, the spray ignited a blast that blew out his apartment's front windows.

The blast also triggered fire that quickly spread and destroyed 80% of Maceda's apartment at Eatontown, New Jersey. Police told the New York Daily News that the Saturday blaze also caused some smoke damage to the apartment above. Luckily, the man escaped the blast without any injury.

So, next time, when you go for spraying, don't forget to call the fire fighters! Just kidding. At least try to stay away from the possible sources of ignition and gas leakage. This will save both you and your house.

The Serengeti Migration

The Serengeti is an ecosystem located in north-western Tanzania and extends to south-western Kenya between latitudes 1 and 3 S and longitudes 34 and 36 E. It spans some 30,000 km and about 70 larger mammal and some 500 avifauna species are found there. The word "Serengeti" is derived from the Maasai language, Maa; specifically "Serengit", meaning "Endless Plains". It contains several national parks and game reserves with different ecosystems including riverine forests, swamps, kopjes, grasslands and woodlands. Serengeti is well known in the world, for it's mass animal migration. In fact, the Serengeti Migration is the largest and longest overland migration in the world.

What is Serengeti Migration? Around October, nearly 2 million herbivores travel from the northern hills toward the southern plains, crossing the Mara River, in pursuit of the rains. In April, they then return to the north through the west, once again crossing the Mara River. This is Serengeti Migration in brief. During the migration, herds of animals move in a circular route in a clockwise direction. So, this phenomenon is sometimes called the Circular Migration.

Why this migration occurs annually? Animals in Serengeti migrates because of rain or the lack of rain. When a seasonal drought dries up grass and water supplies in one area, the grazing animals move on to the next area along the Serengeti migration route where seasonal rains are falling. Migrating animals spend more time in the Serengeti National Park than in the Masai Mara and Ngorongoro Conservation Area during their annual circular journey.

Over a million wildebeests participate in the Serengeti Migration. Hundreds of thousands of zebra and Thomson's gazelles join them. Although lions and other carnivores do not migrate with the grazing animals, they feast on them when their paths cross. Over 250,000 wildebeest alone will die along the journey from Tanzania to Masai Mara Reserve in upper Kenya, a total of 500 miles. Death is often caused by injury, exhaustion, or predation.

The Serengeti Migration is known as one of the natural travel wonders of the world. In your life, you must try to see it. Well, before that watch a video on Serengeti Migration. It shows wildebeests crossing river Mara and more.

$1000 Reward for finding a Missing Cat

This is Dipity, a grey female cat, who was last seen in the parking lot of the Second Cup in South Edmonton Common on June 24. Yes, Dipity is a missing cat and now for her safe return, $1,000 is up as reward!

Kelley Abercrombie, the owner, said Dipity had squeezed out of her car through a window, while she was in the coffee shop for a business meeting. The cat was wearing a pink dress at the time of missing and weighs about five kilograms. Dipity was also wearing an ID collar with Abercrombie's name and phone number, as well as a microchip with identifying information.

As per a witness,a blonde, petite woman between 17 and 21 years old scooped the cat up, saying that a feline shouldn't be wearing a dress. Abercrombie is asking that her cat be returned to any shelter or veterinarian's office, or that anyone who knows where Dipity is call Crime Stoppers or the Edmonton police. CBCNews

Big Dee-Dee : The Giant Lobster

This is Big Dee-Dee, a 10 kg giant lobster that was caught by fisherman Denis Breau from the Bay of Fundy, Canada. Since July 10, the giant lobster has been held in a lobster tank at a local fish market for auction. An offer of 5,000 Canadian dollars (about 5,000 U.S. dollars) has been put in from an Ontario organization that wanted to have the lobster for a banquet.

Then on Friday, Breau agreed to accept 3,000 Canadian dollars from Vancouver resident Laura-Leah Shaw and two anonymous Ontario donors who wanted to release the creature into the Bay of Fundy between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. But, on Sunday, Breau changed is mind and has decided to hand over the lobster to the Huntsman Marine Science Center in New Brunswick province.

Now, the creature will be placed in one of the aquariums at the marine center and monitored closely to see how it adjusts to captivity. If Dee-Dee does not adjust to being held in the new tank, the marine center will look at ways to release it back in the Bay of Fundy. They hopes that this gradual process will help to increase the chances of survial of the giant lobster.

North Pole Marathon

The North Pole Marathon is one of the world’s most extreme marathons! It is run at the top of the World, that means at the exact Geographic North Pole. The length of the race route is 26.2 miles (42 km) and is run on the frozen Arctic ice floor with only about 6-12 feet of ice separating the runners from 12,000 feet deep Arctic Ocean. This is the only marathon in the world that is not run on any land.

The first North Pole Marathon occurred in 2002 when the race director covered the distance alone. In 2003, the first exploratory competitive race was advertised and attracted ten competitors. There were further races in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 making five competitive events to date. The race is now an annual fixture on the international marathon calendar and 127 people in all have successfully completed the event.

Well, running in the North Pole Marathon is not so easy. You will need to run at wind chill temperature of –30C or even below. The whole course will move with the direction of the Ocean current during the race. So, you will feel like running on land at the exact same longitude and latitude coordinates where you began. So, you will need good training, proper gears and a good health to complete the 26.2 miles distance. Well, the race organizer wants everybody to finish this amazing race. So, there is generally no cut-off time of major significance.

The next North Pole marathon is provisionally scheduled to take place on 8th April 2009. Competitors will leave Spitsbergen on 7th April and return to Spitsbergen on 9th March, therefore spending about 36-48 hours in the polar region. Want to join them? Visit www.NorthPoleMarathon.com or www.NPMarathon.com for more information.
