This year, the county employees won and as a prize, their bosses, the county commissioners, kissed a cow during the County fair last week. But, Hansen missed out last week's lip lock with the cow. So, the employees brought Reno, a 3 -year-old horse and Hansel completed his task!

New Insect Species discovered on eBay

A scientist in UK has discovered a new species of insect on eBay! How? Dr Richard Harrington of UK's Royal Entomological Society spotted a sample of fossilised insect encased in amber on eBay. Out of curiosity he ordered it by paying £20 to the Lithuanian seller and found that the fossilised insect is actually a long, extinct and previously unknown species of aphid.

The 3-4 mm long insect is encased in a 40-50 million year old piece of amber, about the size of a small pill. For proper identification, Dr Harrington sent it to fossil aphid expert Professor Ole Heie in Denmark. Heie confirmed that it was from a previously unknown species and named it Mindarus harringtoni after the name of Dr Harrington.

Moisturizers linked to Skin Cancer!

A new study by Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., has found a link between several popular moisturizers and non-melanoma skin cancer in mice. Researchers tested skin moisturizing creams on mice to determine whether their use is linked to cancer. They exposed hairless mice to UV radiation to mimic sun exposure, and afterward treated the mice with one of four popular moisturizers - Dermabase, Dermavan, Eucerin or Vanicream.

They found that the mice treated with moisturizers after the exposure to UV light grew more skin tumors and that these tumors were larger than those on untreated mice. The tumor formation increased 69% in the mice that had been moisturized once a day, five days a week for 17 weeks.

Does it mean that moisturizers are harmful for human also? Well, the authors of the study, which was published online today in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, say they can't conclude that moisturizers cause skin cancers in humans and further research needs to be done. But, the results of this study definitely raises some important questions regarding the increase in skin cancer cases over the last few years.

Orion spacecraft launch delayed

NASA has announced that the launch of the Orion, the spacecraft designed to replace the space shuttle fleet, has been pushed back by one year. Now, NASA hopes that the Constellation Program will make its first flight to the International Space Station on or before 2014. Earlier the first flight of Orion was scheduled for September 2013.

The Orion is a part of the ambitious Constellation program, a NASA program that includes new launch vehicles and a lunar lander. As the present space shuttle fleet will be decommissioned in late September 2010, the new space crafts will re-supply the International Space Station and carry out other special missions such as landing on the moon. Until the Orion space crafts enters into service, NASA will have to depend on Russian Soyuz spacecrafts for supplying astronauts aboard the ISS.
