Gene linked to High Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure
Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine have identified a gene variant that most likely contributes towards high blood pressure in human. The discovery is a result of a new technique called genome-wide association study and it could lead to formulation of new therapies to combat high blood pressure.

The gene, named as STK39, is located in chromosome 2. It produces a protein that most likely regulates how the kidneys process salt and plays a key role in determining blood pressure. During the study the researchers analyzed the genes of 542 people who were members of the Old Order Amish community in Pennsylvania, who were ideal for such studies, because its members are relatively isolated and share a similar rural lifestyle and diet.

Then, the researchers cross checked their findings with another group of Amish people as well as four other groups of white people in the United States as well as in Europe. They found about 20 % of the people studied carried either one or two copies of the gene and it is carried by about one of every five white Americans. The findings of the study was published in the recent edition of journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Although the gene STK39 played a key role there could be other factors that influenced blood pressure such as being overweight, lack of exercise, smoking and too much salt in the diet, the researchers said.

20 Super foods for a Long and Healthy Life

Healthy and YoungLooking for the secret of a long and healthy life? I think, now you can have it, as scientists have found the effective list of wonder foods! Professor Williamson, head of the Functional Foods department at Leeds University, found that diet based on 20 super foods could slow down the aging process and help to beat cancer and heart disease.

The list of wonder foods includes tea, coffee, chocolate, apples, blackberries, blueberries, broccoli, cereal bran, cherries, cherry tomatoes, cranberries, oranges, peaches, plums, raspberries, red grapes, red onions, spinach and strawberries.

According to the expert, the foodstuffs on the list, which is dominated by fruits and vegetables, are rich in naturally occurring chemicals known as polyphenols, which have been linked to a variety of health benefits including protection against heart disease. In the mean time, they can also help to slow down the ageing process by helping to protect cells from the natural damage that occurs over time.

Many experts welcomed the list of wonder foods but also urged that coffee, chocolate and orange juice must be taken in limited amount. Too much of chocolate may have a negative impact on your weight and cholesterol and excessive coffee and orange juice can make inflammatory conditions like arthritis worse. So, start taking more fruits and vegetables and enjoy a healthy life.

Don't make your kids Nicotine Addicted

No Smoking
Are you a smoker? Do you have kids? If your answer is yes to both the questions, then you must take some extra care while smoking. Because your smoking habit may make your child addicted to nicotine! No, this is not my bluff, but the results of a new Canadian study published in journal Addictive Behaviors.

During the study, Canadian researchers looked at 1800 kids, who were all exposed to secondhand smoke and aged between 10 to 12 years. Defying the conventional belief that secondhand smoke can't make a person nicotine addict, the researchers found that 5% of those kids became addicted to nicotine, even though they never smoked themselves.

In my view, this is really a serious issue that we all must look into. If you are a smoker, you must take care not to smoke before or near kids. And if possible quit smoking. Don't make your kids Nicotine Addicted!

Energy Drinks are not so Good for Health

Love energy drinks? Then you must pay your attention to a new study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. The study says that energy drinks can have more than 10 times the caffeine of soft drinks, which is not so beneficial for our health.

The study, led by Roland Griffiths from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, reports that energy drinks can cause caffeine intoxication. Caffeine intoxication can lead to serious nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, upset stomach, tremors, rapid heartbeat etc. In rare cases of overdose, it can result in death also!

Right now, there is no regulations that suggests a limit on the amount of caffeine that can be present in a energy drink. The study reveals that a typical 12-ounce soft drink contains about 35 milligrams of caffeine, while some energy drinks have as much as 500 milligrams. So, there must be some limit on caffeine content in energy drinks, otherwise these drinks may lead to serious cases of caffeine abuse. And before the authorities put some kind of limits, you must control your own intake.

Chewing Gum reduces Stress and Helps Memory

Chewing gum are good for your memory and performance! This is not my view, but the results of a new study conducted in Australia. The results of the study reveals that chewing gum can reduce stress, anxiety and can even improve your memory. That's really a good news for chewing gum eaters.

The Australian study was led by Dr. Andrew Scholey, the professor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Swinburne University in Melbourne and was presented on August 30, 2008, at the 10th International Congress of Behavioral Medicine Rissho University in Tokyo. Dr. Andrew claimed that chewing gum can reduce anxiety and stress level, improve alertness and also enhance the concentration level for any individual while performing multitasking activities.

The researchers conducted the test on Defined Intensity Stressor Simulation (DISS), a multi-tasking platform that measures the stress and performance level while at continuously rising stress level during performing multitasking work on a group of 40 persons between the average age group of 22 years. They divided the group of people into two parts - chewing gum eaters and non-chewing gum eaters and performed the tests. After end of the test, the researchers observed that the chewing gum eaters showed a reduction in anxiety at 17% during mild stress and 10% during moderate stress, and measured 19% greater alertness during mild stress and 8% during moderate stress in as compared to non-gum chewers.

The best thing that had been observed from this study is the noticeable enhancement in overall performance on multitasking activities. So, next time when you are busy in some work, don't forget to chew some gum!

Eating Chicken Nuggets for 18 Years

Carla Laban, a 20-year-old British girl, is now enjoying the taste of fresh fruit and other delicious foods, after spending 18 years of her life eating chicken nuggets and chips. Sounds strange, but it is true. She was suffering from a food phobia, which left her unable to swallow any food but chicken nuggets and chips. Now with the help of a hypnotherapist, she is learning to eat other foods!

"I can remember having chicken nuggets and chips for the first and thinking, 'I can eat this without being sick,'" the Mirror quoted her, as saying.

Carla, who lives with her mum, dad Mark and 18-year-old brother Connor in Wyken, Coventry, was only 2 years old, when her family discovered that chicken nuggets was the only meal that did not make her feel badly sick. She couldn't even stand the smell of other food. From then on, she skipped breakfast each day then had nuggets for lunch and dinner, eating around 30 a day. That unbalanced diet affected her health and she used to get ill quite a lot. Exercise and vitamins even failed to improve her health.

Then, Carla visited Russell Hemmings at the Bridge Clinic and discovered that she had a phobia which stemmed back to her childhood when she had a dairy intolerance. Now with the help of a hypnotherapist she can eat most things including chunky chips and roast chicken.

Moisturizers linked to Skin Cancer!

A new study by Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., has found a link between several popular moisturizers and non-melanoma skin cancer in mice. Researchers tested skin moisturizing creams on mice to determine whether their use is linked to cancer. They exposed hairless mice to UV radiation to mimic sun exposure, and afterward treated the mice with one of four popular moisturizers - Dermabase, Dermavan, Eucerin or Vanicream.

They found that the mice treated with moisturizers after the exposure to UV light grew more skin tumors and that these tumors were larger than those on untreated mice. The tumor formation increased 69% in the mice that had been moisturized once a day, five days a week for 17 weeks.

Does it mean that moisturizers are harmful for human also? Well, the authors of the study, which was published online today in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, say they can't conclude that moisturizers cause skin cancers in humans and further research needs to be done. But, the results of this study definitely raises some important questions regarding the increase in skin cancer cases over the last few years.

Run and Live Longer

Running on a regular basis can slow down the effects of ageing. A study published in the recent issue of Archives of Internal Medicine reveals this fact. The study also points that regular jogging, or any consistent aerobic exercise in middle age and late in life may reduce people's risk of disabilities and and disease conditions like cancer.

This ongoing study was started two decades ago, in 1984 by the Stanford University Medical Center team. It tracked 538 people who run regularly and 423 people who never run in their life. Most of the runners in this study were selected from a national running club, while the control group of never runners were drawn from the faculty and staff at Stanford University. All participants in this study were age 50 or older when the study began. Besides their exercise habits, the two group of people were demographically matched, with similarity in lifestyle habits, ethnicity and physical characteristics like weight.

Now the results of the study shows that about 34% of the non-runners had died compared to only 15% of the runners. Both the groups became more disabled with age, but in case of the runners the onset of disability started an average of 16 years later. Running not only appeared to slow the rate of heart and artery related deaths in old age, but also resulted in fewer early deaths from cancer, neurological disease, infections and other causes.

This Stanford University study delivers a pro-exercise message and once again proves that exercise is important for a good health. So, what to live a healthy life? Run regularly and if not possible, at least go for aerobic exercise.

Crocs Sandals banned in Austrian Hospitals

Health officers in Austria have banned the use of Crocs sandals in hospitals. Why? Because, these trendy sandals can generate massive amounts of static electricity, which is not favorable for the patients. The health safety officers warns that the static electricity produced by these sandals may increase the chances of heart attack in patients. Even the static electricity discharge could wipe out the computer memories and data processing functions of life-saving equipments, which will make them useless.

Vienna's biggest hospital - SMZ Ost has already banned the shoes from operating theaters and the casualty department in their hospital. The Viennese Hospital Authority safety spokesman Peter Woelfl said Crocs would stay banned until they could be made anti-static.

On the other hand, Ernst Widmann, the head of Crocs in Austria, thinks that this is an insane decision and he haven't heard of a single incident where Crocs caused a critical incident in hospitals. What you think about this? Can these trendy sandals really create some problem to the patients?

How Fasting Helped Me?

Recently, I was advised by my doctor to go for fasting! Sounds odd? A doctor is advising a patient to go for fasting? Why? I was having some minor stomach related complications. So, I went to a family doctor, who is also a good friend of mine. He examined me complications and found that it is not a serious problem. My liver is healthy and working nicely. But, the problem is that my digestion process is running too fast and gas is developed too often in my stomach. So, he advised me to go for fasting!

What is fasting? In simple words, fasting is a process of abstaining for food and or drink for a specific period of time. The reasons of fasting may be different for different individual. Some people may go for fasting due to religious reasons, while some people may wan to fast due to personal conviction or advise. But, one thing is right that, for ages fasting has been used as an effective treatment to many common diseases and illnesses. I have found the evidence of it's effectiveness after following one month of fasting schedule.

As advised by my friend, I started my fasting on the first Monday of June. I escaped food during the day and took light food during night. This continued for the next three Mondays. And now, after fasting for four consecutive Mondays, I am feeling much better. I think, my metabolic processes are working fine and there is no sign of earlier complications. So, fasting helped me to recover from those complication, without taking any medicines.

Note: Though fasting is being used and advised for ages, it may harm you, if followed without proper guidance. In some cases fasting may result in bad effects. So, never try to go for fasting without the advise of an expert. Because, for a good health, food is necessary!

Cancer treatment with Tobacco

Tobacco is injurious to heath and it may cause cancer. I think, every people know this fact. But a recent work by researchers from Stanford University in California reveals that tobacco may actually offer the means to treat cancer! What? Is it possible? Read on.

The researchers used the tobacco plants as factories for an antibody chemical specific to the cells which cause follicular B-cell lymphoma. Then, these antibodies are put into a patient newly-diagnosed with the disease, to "prime" the body's immune system to attack any cell carrying them. If successful, this would mean the body would then recognize and destroy the lymphoma cells.

Dr Ronald Levy, who is leading the research, said: "It's pretty cool technology - and it's really ironic that you would make a treatment for cancer out of tobacco. That appealed to me."

Well, this experimental vaccine has only been tested on a limited number of patients to check for any side-effects of using plant-produced antibodies. So, its effectiveness at fighting the deadly disease is still uncertain. Link

Mitral Valve and a Healthy Life

The mitral valve is the "inflow valve" for the left side of the heart. It opens and closes to allow oxygenated blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle. So, it is very important part of our body. A mitral valve replacement or repair is required in order to treat severe cases of mitral valve prolapse, heart valve stenosis, or other valvular diseases. Most surgeons will prescribe you to go for valve replacement or artificial valve implantation. It will work. But, there are some drawbacks in valve replacement. For example, patients are required to use blood thinners and any kind of infections in the valve will result in dangerous consequences. Valve replacement also increases the chances of stroke.

So, some surgeons have started to use the repairing techniques to treat the damaged valve. A valve repair still requires a major cardiac surgery but may offer the significant advantage of avoiding blood thinners. Repairing of valve also increases long-term survival rate and reduces the risk of stroke. Well, still mitral valve repair is a specialized technique and offered by only a few renowned hospitals worldwide.

If you are thinking about mitral valve surgery, you can contact the Maryland Heart Center of University of Maryland Medical Center. They are specialized in the surgical treatment of many valvular disease, including mitral valve repair surgery. In fact, they are the leaders in repairing mitral valve. They have successfully repaired the damaged mitral valves of 92% of their patients, instead of mitral valve replacement. This percentage is well above the national average and it was achieved only because of their highly skilled surgeons and use of advanced techniques.

Surgeons at the Maryland Heart Center now routinely performs a minimally invasive and videoscopic mitral valve repair surgery. This special surgery is performed through a two-inch keyhole incision on the side of the chest and enables patients to return to normal life sooner after surgery.

For more information about mitral valve surgery and other related service you can visit the official website of Maryland Heart Center (www.umm.edu/heart/). On their website, you will learn a lot of things about heart diseases and cardiac surgeries. Their website also provides some phone numbers, that you can use to book an appointment or to inquire about their services.
