Burj Dubai is now World's Tallest Tower

Burj Dubai, the Emaar Properties' famous tower that is under construction, is now the World's Tallest Man-made Structure after reaching a new record height of 688 metres. The tower surpasses the 628.8 meter tall KVLY-TV mast in North Dakota, US, which has held the record for the world's tallest supported structure since 1963.

Burj Dubai or Dubai tower was designed by Chicago-based Skidmore and is constructed by South Korea's Samsung Corporation. At over 160 storeys, Burj Dubai has the largest number of floors in any building. It is taller than the Taipei 101 building (508 meters) in Taiwan and the CN Tower (553.33 meters) in Toronto, Canada.

After completion of construction work, Burj Dubai should meet all four criteria listed by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), which classifies the world's tallest structures. CTBUH measures the height of buildings to the structural top, the highest occupied floor, the top of the roof and the tip of the spire, pinnacle, antenna, mast or flag pole.

The Battle of the Oranges

The "Battle of the Oranges" is held every February in the Italian twon of 'Ivrea'. It is a part of the traditional carnival of the region and thousands of local people, divided into nine combat teams, fights this odd battle with oranges.

On three carnival days (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday) of February, the "Battle of the Oranges" is played by electing one of the citizens as Mugnaia. There is a legend that a miller's daughter (a "Mugnaia") once refused to accept the "right" of the local duke to spend a night with each newly wed woman and chopped his head off. So, today the carriages represent the duke's guard and the orange throwers the revolutionaries.

Still, the origin of this tradition to throw oranges is not well understood, particularly as oranges do not grow in the foothills of the Italian Alps and must be imported from Sicily.

The "Battle of the Oranges" ends the night of "Fat Tuesday" with a silent march that closes the carnival and the "Prefect" says goodbye to everyone with the classical phrase "See you next Fat Tuesday at 1 pm."

Chewing Gum reduces Stress and Helps Memory

Chewing gum are good for your memory and performance! This is not my view, but the results of a new study conducted in Australia. The results of the study reveals that chewing gum can reduce stress, anxiety and can even improve your memory. That's really a good news for chewing gum eaters.

The Australian study was led by Dr. Andrew Scholey, the professor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Swinburne University in Melbourne and was presented on August 30, 2008, at the 10th International Congress of Behavioral Medicine Rissho University in Tokyo. Dr. Andrew claimed that chewing gum can reduce anxiety and stress level, improve alertness and also enhance the concentration level for any individual while performing multitasking activities.

The researchers conducted the test on Defined Intensity Stressor Simulation (DISS), a multi-tasking platform that measures the stress and performance level while at continuously rising stress level during performing multitasking work on a group of 40 persons between the average age group of 22 years. They divided the group of people into two parts - chewing gum eaters and non-chewing gum eaters and performed the tests. After end of the test, the researchers observed that the chewing gum eaters showed a reduction in anxiety at 17% during mild stress and 10% during moderate stress, and measured 19% greater alertness during mild stress and 8% during moderate stress in as compared to non-gum chewers.

The best thing that had been observed from this study is the noticeable enhancement in overall performance on multitasking activities. So, next time when you are busy in some work, don't forget to chew some gum!

Vladimir Putin Shoots a Tiger

Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have just shoot a tiger. Wait! It is not for fun, but for a good cause. According to media reports, he visited the Ussuri Reserve in far eastern Russia to see how scientists are tracking the critically endangered Siberian tigers when one of the animals approached. There, he aided a program to track the tigers by shooting a 5-year-old female cat with a tranquilizer gun after it had freed itself from a restraint.

The Siberian, or Amur tiger, is the world's largest wild cat. It can weigh up to 450kg (1,000lb) and measure up to three metres from nose to the tip of the tail. Recently it has pounced back from the brink of extinction to hit its highest population level for at least 100 years.

Well, that's definitely a good action. The televised footage on Monday, showed Putin on camouflage, deep in the woods, placing a collar with a tracking device around the neck of the tranquilized tiger. He also patted its cheek like a pet and said: "She'll remember us." Link

Diamonds out of Ashes of Dead People

Algordanza, a small company based in Switzerland, can help you to remember your loved ones forever, even after their death! How? They prepares special high-grade certified diamonds out of the ashes of your beloved deceased in memory to their unique and wonderful life. Really a cool and unique way to keep the memory of your loved ones alive.

Each one of those artificial diamonds takes between three weeks and three months to create and their prices starts from less than 5,000 euros ($7,488). Often the gem is mounted in jewelry, which the bereaved then wear to maintain close contact with their loved one. But some customers have different plans.

As only 2 percent of a corpse's ashes are carbon, which then has to be purified to create the permanent momento diamond, the largest size diamond offered by Algordanza is 1 carat, which costs 13,328 euros.

Algordanza's Chairman Veit Brimer first saw a business opportunity in "remembrance" diamonds after meeting a Russian chemist, who explained how gems could be created in a laboratory. In its first year, 2004, the company sold one diamond. These days it is creating about 60 a month, which Brimer attributes to word-of-mouth recommendations and media coverage, as Algordanza does not advertise.

Algordanza does 40 percent of its business in Japan, its largest market, where cremation is more common because land is so scarce. Many clients from Europe travel to Chur to accompany the deceased on their final journey and meet the people who will turn the ashes into a diamond.

Struck by Lightning after Swearing

Sometimes, God also reacts to our actions! A Chinese man got struck by lightning, right after he swore to God that he didn't owe money to a neighbour.

Xu, the man, made the oath in front of a crowd of neighbours in Fuqing city, China. He vowed that he had never borrowed money from Mr Huang, who claimed that Xu borrowed 500 yuan (about $20) from him.

"He borrowed 500 yuan three years ago from me for a friend's marriage gift, but he has denied it ever since then," said Huang, who went to Xu's home to demand payment.

Huang told that he would wave the debt if Xu dared to swear to God that he never borrowed money. Xu made the oath, but a minute later he was suddenly struck by lightning. It was like immediate reply from God.

He was immediately taken to a local hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had been hit by lightning. Well, Xu is safe and now expected to make a full recovery.
