Sandy Allen - World's Tallest Woman dies at 53

Sandy Allen, the World's tallest woman is no more. She died at the age of 53 on Wednesday, in an Indiana nursing home. Sandy Allen was 7-foot, 7-inch (2.32 metre) tall and was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the "World's Tallest Woman".

Allen was born on June 18, 1955, in Chicago. A tumour on her pituitary gland caused the abnormal growth of her height. She had surgery on the gland at age 22. In her later years, Allen used a wheelchair because her legs and back could not support her tall stature in a standing position. Because of this physical limitation, she spent her last years in Shelbyville, Indiana, in a retirement center. The Indianapolis Star reported that Allen died early in the morning of August 13, 2008.

She appeared in the Academy Award-winning Italian film Il Casanova di Federico Fellini, in a TV movie called Side Show, and in a Canadian/American documentary film called Being Different. Split Enz, a music band from New Zealand, immortalized her with the song "Hello Sandy Allen".

Run and Live Longer

Running on a regular basis can slow down the effects of ageing. A study published in the recent issue of Archives of Internal Medicine reveals this fact. The study also points that regular jogging, or any consistent aerobic exercise in middle age and late in life may reduce people's risk of disabilities and and disease conditions like cancer.

This ongoing study was started two decades ago, in 1984 by the Stanford University Medical Center team. It tracked 538 people who run regularly and 423 people who never run in their life. Most of the runners in this study were selected from a national running club, while the control group of never runners were drawn from the faculty and staff at Stanford University. All participants in this study were age 50 or older when the study began. Besides their exercise habits, the two group of people were demographically matched, with similarity in lifestyle habits, ethnicity and physical characteristics like weight.

Now the results of the study shows that about 34% of the non-runners had died compared to only 15% of the runners. Both the groups became more disabled with age, but in case of the runners the onset of disability started an average of 16 years later. Running not only appeared to slow the rate of heart and artery related deaths in old age, but also resulted in fewer early deaths from cancer, neurological disease, infections and other causes.

This Stanford University study delivers a pro-exercise message and once again proves that exercise is important for a good health. So, what to live a healthy life? Run regularly and if not possible, at least go for aerobic exercise.

Enjoyed the opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games? Then you must have noticed the cute, little girl singing "Ode to the Motherland" in the center stage of 'Bird's Nest'. But, do you know that the song was actually sung by a different girl? A member of China's Politburo demanded the last-minute change during a live rehearsal shortly before the ceremony.

The real singer of the patriotic song "Ode to the Motherland" was Yang Peiyi, a 7 year old girl. She was declared "not suitable" for the Olympic Opening Ceremony because of her chubby face and crooked baby teeth. So, officials picked Lin Miaoke, a 9-year-old girl, who perfectly mouthed the song with a beautiful smile.

This swith was done to give a perfect look the the opening ceremony. Peiyi, the original singer, later told China Central Television that just having her voice used in the ceremony was an honor. But, do you think that justice was done to both the girl?

Crocs Sandals banned in Austrian Hospitals

Health officers in Austria have banned the use of Crocs sandals in hospitals. Why? Because, these trendy sandals can generate massive amounts of static electricity, which is not favorable for the patients. The health safety officers warns that the static electricity produced by these sandals may increase the chances of heart attack in patients. Even the static electricity discharge could wipe out the computer memories and data processing functions of life-saving equipments, which will make them useless.

Vienna's biggest hospital - SMZ Ost has already banned the shoes from operating theaters and the casualty department in their hospital. The Viennese Hospital Authority safety spokesman Peter Woelfl said Crocs would stay banned until they could be made anti-static.

On the other hand, Ernst Widmann, the head of Crocs in Austria, thinks that this is an insane decision and he haven't heard of a single incident where Crocs caused a critical incident in hospitals. What you think about this? Can these trendy sandals really create some problem to the patients?

First Commercial Cloning of Pet Dog

On Tuesday, a group of Scientists in South Korea revealed that they have completed the world's first commercial cloning of a pet dog. They cloned five identical copies of Booger, a pit bull terrier of Bernann McKinney, from California. RNL Bio, the company which arranged the cloning, said that it is now open for future bookings.

"Booger was my partner and my friend," Ms McKinney said, as she appeared with the five identical copies of her pet, in a press conference. She paid £25,000 for the cloning of Booger.

How the cloning was done? Scientists at Seoul National University created a number of embryos from the preserved skin cells taken from Booger's ear tissue before he died. The embryos were then implanted into two surrogate mother dogs. And three months later, the five puppies were born.
